Join the Cochrane Ranche Amateur Players as they endeavour to produce their own theatrical adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice—complete with requisite interpretive dance, pirates, and a marauding bear. FEATURE ARTIST FOR MARCH: BIGOUDI
Painting with Wax
Encaustic, or painting with wax is an ancient technique using pigments melted with wax and fixed or fused to the painting surface with heat. Bigoudi prefers natural pigments and uses heavy cotton canvas as her painting surface. “It is the rich earthiness of the materials that inspires my process and choice of subject,” says Bigoudi. “I see encaustic painting as liquid finding form.”
Pascale Ouellet aka Bigoudi, is a juried member of the Society of Canadian Artists (SCA) and an active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists (FCA). She is the recipient of the 2009 Canmore Mayor’s Awards for Arts & Culture in the ‘Artistic Achievement’ category and is part of the Corridor Collective in Canmore, AB, where she has her own studio. Pascale's work can be found in private and corporate collections in the US and Canada.

On Sunday, March 14, 1:00-2:00 pm, we are staging Alberta’s first Battle of the Bikes to raise awareness and support for the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer benefiting the Alberta Cancer Foundation. Cyclists will square off in giant spinning classes at Northlands in Edmonton and Eau Claire Mall in downtown Calgary. This really promises to be a spectacle and we’ll be inviting the media to participate and cover each event....because the city with the most participants gets bragging rights.
And there could be more. Currently the Guinness World Record for stationery cycling classes stands at 423 participants. We hope to break this record but it can only happen in one city. There’s no charge to participate and it’s open to everyone. So get as many friends as you can out there on bikes; help claim the victory for your favorite city - and together we’ll raise even more awareness about the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer.

Each night following the performances an adjudicator speaks to the audience about their thoughts on the work that night.

Calgary Seedy Saturday is part of the worldwide Seedy Saturday/Sunday events that celebrate open-pollinated seeds. In Calgary, the event is coordinated with the support of the Community Garden Resource Network.
Calgary Seedy Saturday is keeping the skill of growing from seed to seed alive in Calgary. As large commercial seed companies consolidate and only offer more hybrids and patented varieties, we are increasingly losing the regionally adapted collections that have developed in our unique prairie climate.
Calgary Seedy Saturday helps maintain this irreplaceable genetic diversity by offering non-hybridized, non-GMO varieties of seeds. You and your family can discover the superior taste of heirloom vegetables, learn to save seeds and share them with your neighbours. As you grow them season after season these seeds will adapt and grow that much healthier!

Speaker David Knudson, Dept. of Physics and Astronomy, University of Calgary
"Locating the Edge of Space"
The halfway point between the two regimes of where earth's atmosphere ends and space begins - the violent and the gentle - can be thought of as the "edge of space". Understanding the boundary between the Earth’s atmosphere and outer space is fundamental to the bigger picture of the effects of space on the Earth’s climate and environment. Dr. Knudsen's talk will describe research at the University of Calgary that has provided a new look and new insights into this very important region.
We will also feature a ‘what’s up’ in the winter sky’ presentation and our telescopes operating with astronomers ready to answer your questions.
In the sky - Saturn will be at its closest and this is the best time for observing the ringed planet.

Water crises are emerging more frequently in recent years, and they threaten the lives of people everywhere.
The need for comprehensive and integrated water management programs that aim at involving parties outside the water sector is more pressing today. Governments alone cannot solve water crises without the cooperation and coordination of other groups. Although there is a growing public awareness on world water issues, there is little concerted and long-term effective efforts on the water front. And only when water disasters hit communities concrete actions take place, often with limited results in the short-term.
This conference aims at bringing the subject of water issues to the frontline and to provide a space for discussion and debate by policy makers, water managers, academics, students and the public in general. It will focus on Alberta water management, progress and challenges, and the implications of water issues around the world.
The Centre for Public Interest Accounting, at the Haskayne School of Business, along with the Development Studies Club are pleased to sponsor the Water for Life 2010 conference at the University of Calgary.

The increase of critical incidents (violence, suicide, tragedy, etc.) requires schools, communities and organizations to be prepared to respond to these unfortunate events. This training will focus on how to organize effectively and quickly at a time of high stress so that groups are better prepared to respond to the emotional needs of those affected by a critical incident. Participants will leave the workshop with a clear understanding of how to implement their own crisis response team and plan for their specific environment. A major portion of the second day will be dedicated to exploring CTRI's Critical Incident Group Debriefing model. While group debriefing is a very important tool in responding to unfortunate events, it is also a process that requires much consideration and reflection prior to implementing.

Please note that for the purpose of this workshop, “crisis response” refers to the steps that are made after a critical incident. This is not a threat assessment or emergency preparedness workshop.

Ploughshares Monthly Meeting

Fif Fernandes and Carolyn Pogue will speak about using the arts to explore and achieve peace. Together Fif and Carolyn call themselves PeaceJam, a couple of slightly off-the-wall women who might use story, puppetry, music, laughter yoga, breathing or visual arts to help young people focus on peace with self, nature, family, community and the world. They are the co-founders of The Art of Peace: A Camp for Kids, a regular summer event for artists and for children aged 9 to 13. Since the first Art of Peace Camp in Calgary 5 years ago, there have been 4 other camps started, from Halifax to Gulu, Uganda.
When they are not presenting as PeaceJam, you may find Carolyn writing another peace book or giving a workshop about writing to change the world in a school or library. You might find Fif as Shanti Amani Salaama the Peace Fairy at Banker's Hall or as Jumpa, the Therapeutic Clown at the Children's Hospital.

Book Launch: Hearing (Our) Voices: Participatory Research in Mental Health
Location: Pages Bookstore on Kensington, 1135 Kensington Road N.W.
When: Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at 7:30 PM
Hearing (Our) Voices describes two innovative participatory action research projects - one on communication with medical professionals, the other on housing - carried out by a group of people diagnosed with schizophrenia under the guidance of Professor Barbara Schneider. Participants designed the research, conducted interviews and focus groups, participated in data analysis, and disseminated research results through a number of innovative strategies including theatre performances, a documentary film, a graphic novel, and a travelling exhibit.
Emerging from these projects is the central and significant finding that people diagnosed with schizophrenia are caught between their dependence on care and their longing for independent lives. The research presented in Hearing (Our) Voices points to a way to resolve this paradox and transform lives through the inclusion of people diagnosed with schizophrenia in research, in decision-making about their own treatment and housing, and in public discourse about schizophrenia.
Barbara Schneider is an associate professor in the Communication Studies Program at the University of Calgary.

Workshop Theatre’s last show of the season!
The Coarse Acting Show
A farce by Michael Green
May 7 - May 15 2010
Directed by P. Gail Whiteford
Based on the original best selling book, “The Art of Coarse Acting” by Michael Green, this is a compilation of four one act plays that the coarse actor (and nobody else) would be proud of. And what is a coarse actor? According to Green, a coarse actor is "one who can remember his lines, but not the order in which they come. One who performs . . . amid lethal props. The Coarse Actor's aim is to upstage the rest of the cast. His hope is to be dead by Act Two so that he can spend the rest of his time in the bar. His problems? Everyone else connected with the production.
The “Coarse Acting Show” runs at the Pumphouse Theatre May 7th to May 15th 2010. Showtimes are Tuesday to Saturday at 8:00pm and Sunday at 2:30pm
There is a special “Pay what you can Night” Preview night on Thursday May 6th. 2 for $20 Night is Tuesday May 11th at 8:00pm.
For tickets log on to www.workshoptheatre.org Workshop Theatre tickets can also be purchased at the door or by phone through Storybook Theatre box office: 403-216-0808.

Assertive Communication
Understanding our communication style and how we interact with others is essential to positive and productive relations. Effective communication requires us not only to be aware of ourselves, but also to be responsive and aware of others. Being assertive in communication is the ability to express positive and negative ideas and feelings in a transparent, welcoming and direct way – to state clearly and without defensiveness what one needs. Participants of this workshop will build an awareness of their communication patterns and learn to deal confidently with people around them. This workshop is fun, practical and highly effective at improving communication awareness and skills.

The idea of having young people singing and dancing at the same time and then to have those same performers present serious concert material was unheard of. Impossible! was the reaction. A quarter of a century later and we're still here, still breaking new ground. We've let the music lead us, and what an amazing journey it has been. Here we are - 25 Years Strong! See it! Hear it! Believe it!
