The Love List
This is an extremely funny adult comedy from the pen of renowned Canadian Playwright Norm Foster. There is an old adage that states "be careful what you wish for"! This statement is tested to it's comic limits. As a 50th birthday gift Leon has bought Bill a "love list" from a dating service called "Got A Match" run by an old gypsy woman. Reluctantly Bill is presuaded to write down the ten characteristics he is looking for in his dream woman, and the service will find someone to fit the bill. The guys collaborate on the list, creating Bill's ideal woman. By the end of the play Bill has learned more than he wants to about perfection. Perfection is driving him nuts!
The show is directed by Mike Hughes and produced by Alan LeBoeuf
"THE LOVE LIST" runs at the Pumphouse Theatre January 29th to February 6th 2010. Showtimes are Tuesday to Saturday at 8.00pm and Sunday at 2.30pm

The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) has determined that the number of Canadians born outside Canada is increasing. CIDA has also discovered that Canadian born outside of Canada send millions of dollars in a form of remittances to their respective countries of origin.  However, these remittances rarely create impacts to improve living standards. Furthermore, new Canadians have skills, knowledge or expertise, financial capacities, and they are familiar with the cultures of the countries of their origin. Again, CIDA is not tapping into the available resources. Given the above fact, new Canadians are not involved in international development as defined by CIDA. So the question is, why are new Canadians not involved in international development as promoted by CIDA? The Diaspora Communities Brainstorming Meeting is about to exchange ideas on how to enhance new Canadian involvement in international development through CIDA or any other international development agency. Come let us exchange ideas.
Thanks,
Mugasa

Moche Erotic Art: Sex and Death in Ancient Peru

Event is hosted by the Archaeological Society of Alberta and free to the public.
Abstract: Human sexuality is a universal phenomenon, but sex acts and their meaning vary with context and culture. Ancient Peru – an area of the world where culture and sexual
mores developed independent of Old World influences – provides a check on variety in human sexuality with imagery that has been variously described as fertility related, erotic, pornographic, or morally degenerate. The Moche people, who flourished on the north coast of Peru in the first centuries A.D., recorded the most intimate details of their sex lives in ceramic effigy vessels. Why? Drawing upon archaeology, ethnohistory, and ethnography
to create an indigenous cultural context within which to view the subject matter, this presentation argues that, for the Moche, non-propagative sexual practices were part of
a continuum which transcended the procreation/pleasure dichotomy, and ultimately were directed at the dead.

As Canadian communities stretch to equip themselves for a rapidly changing world, concerns with food security, food sustainability and food sovereignty are suddenly "on the table".  Consumers want assurances that their food is safe.

Shoppers who only a short time ago thought of food as coming from the store increasingly want to know where and how it was produced.   There is a growing segment of consumers who now want to feel some sort of "relationship" with the farmer who grew it.    Canadians who eat for a living are finally waking up to the fact that farmers are important.  Can good public policy be far behind?

Come listen to Canadian Agrologist and farm columnist Wendy Holm talk about why emerging public focus on food is happening "just in time" and what communities can do to support it...

Calgary Seedy Saturday is part of the worldwide Seedy Saturday/Sunday events that celebrate open-pollinated seeds. In Calgary, the event is coordinated with the support of the Community Garden Resource Network.
Calgary Seedy Saturday is keeping the skill of growing from seed to seed alive in Calgary. As large commercial seed companies consolidate and only offer more hybrids and patented varieties, we are increasingly losing the regionally adapted collections that have developed in our unique prairie climate.
Calgary Seedy Saturday helps maintain this irreplaceable genetic diversity by offering non-hybridized, non-GMO varieties of seeds. You and your family can discover the superior taste of heirloom vegetables, learn to save seeds and share them with your neighbours. As you grow them season after season these seeds will adapt and grow that much healthier!

Water crises are emerging more frequently in recent years, and they threaten the lives of people everywhere.
The need for comprehensive and integrated water management programs that aim at involving parties outside the water sector is more pressing today. Governments alone cannot solve water crises without the cooperation and coordination of other groups. Although there is a growing public awareness on world water issues, there is little concerted and long-term effective efforts on the water front. And only when water disasters hit communities concrete actions take place, often with limited results in the short-term.
This conference aims at bringing the subject of water issues to the frontline and to provide a space for discussion and debate by policy makers, water managers, academics, students and the public in general. It will focus on Alberta water management, progress and challenges, and the implications of water issues around the world.
The Centre for Public Interest Accounting, at the Haskayne School of Business, along with the Development Studies Club are pleased to sponsor the Water for Life 2010 conference at the University of Calgary.

Unleash your imagination, spark your creativity and inspire your personal best!

The increase of critical incidents (violence, suicide, tragedy, etc.) requires schools, communities and organizations to be prepared to respond to these unfortunate events. This training will focus on how to organize effectively and quickly at a time of high stress so that groups are better prepared to respond to the emotional needs of those affected by a critical incident. Participants will leave the workshop with a clear understanding of how to implement their own crisis response team and plan for their specific environment. A major portion of the second day will be dedicated to exploring CTRI's Critical Incident Group Debriefing model. While group debriefing is a very important tool in responding to unfortunate events, it is also a process that requires much consideration and reflection prior to implementing.

Please note that for the purpose of this workshop, “crisis response” refers to the steps that are made after a critical incident. This is not a threat assessment or emergency preparedness workshop.
