Krzysztof Jablonski, Calgary-based and internationally renowned pianist will join the Calgary Civic Symphony for our fourth concert of the 2018 – 2019 season, playing Beethoven's beloved "Fourth Piano Concerto". In addition to this ground-breaking work by Beethoven, the concert will include: Hyacinth Caelum by Canadian composer Rolf Boon is another of the Sesquies composed to celebrate Canada's 150th Birthday. The work illustrates Lethbridge’s geography and cultural heritage; and its title is a reference to the blue skies that typically adorn the city’s prairie environment. Pelléas et Mélisande, Op. 80: One of Gabriel Fauré's works of the last years of the 19th century that included incidental music for the English premiere of Maurice Maeterlinck's Pelléas et Mélisande, a Symbolist play about forbidden love. Firebird Suite (1919), by Igor Stravinsky was a resounding success at the Paris premiere, and remained Stravinsky's most popular work for half a century. Stravinsky himself conducted hundreds of performances of The Firebird, mainly in the form of the suites, of which the 1919 version became the best known. Maestro Rolf Bertsch conducts the Civic in this our fourth and penultimate concert of the 2018 – 2019 season. Fantastic Firebird takes place on Sunday, April 7th at 2:30 pm at the Jack Singer Concert Hall. The pre-concert chat/recital will commence at 1:45 pm. The Calgary Civic Symphony was founded in 1975 as Calgary’s volunteer orchestra. Over the years, the Civic has swelled to over 80 musicians. With an interesting diversity in professions, its members come together each week to rehearse complex orchestral works. Under the baton of Artistic Director and Conductor Rolf Bertsch, the Symphony shapes and polishes performances that are truly brilliant! Morpheus Theatre presents ‘Princess Ida’, Gilbert & Sullivan’s 8th collaboration, from April 26 – May 11, 2019. The operetta satirizes feminism, women's education and Darwinian evolution, which were controversial topics in conservative Victorian England, and is based on a twist of Tennyson’s poem called ‘The Princess’. Gilbert treated the topics with a light touch; in fact, the show pokes more fun at male foolishness and chauvinism than anything else. In turn, Sullivan’s score has been called majestic, and the beloved sequence of songs in Act II is known as the “string of pearls”. Directed by Kaleigh Richards, Princess Ida is the exciting conclusion of Morpheus’ 24th season and is sure to have audiences jumping for joy as they laugh over the players’ antics. Come join in the fun! Synopsis: Princess Ida is having nothing to do with men, never mind love, or marriage. She is so firm in her belief that she has locked herself away in a University, attended only by women, and that is exactly where she plans to stay. She was betrothed to young Prince Hilarion from a very early age, and her failure to arrive to meet him with her father, King Gama, could be interpreted as an act of war, but still, she is having none of it. In fact, she’s willing to fight the men who show up on her doorstep if need be. Her fellow chaste and heretofore uninterested female friends, on the other hand, find themselves face to face with Cupid and less keen to do battle. A lesser known work of the dynamic duo, Princess Ida is nonetheless brimming with those qualities we love in the works of Gilbert and Sullivan: humour, sweeping and intelligent lyrics, witty commentary, danger and commotion! In the end, love wins the day, and for more than just our royal couple. Specifics: Princess Ida April 26 – May 11, 2019 Venue: The Pumphouse Theatre, 2140 Pumphouse Avenue SW Wednesday to Saturday: 7:30 p.m. Saturday & Sunday matinees: 2:00 p.m. Adults: $23 Students & Seniors: $18 Tickets: 403-246-2999 or visit www.morpheustheat

No experience needed to have a great time at Calgary's only LIVE MUSIC square dance event. Adults and teens welcome to an old-time social in the Irish Cultural Centre's iconic dance hall. It's an evening of squares, circles, longways and more, taught on the spot with caller Leslie Gotfrit, to the driving tunes of a Southern style string band. This is about fun and laughter, not fancy foot work, a high energy dance party where two left feet won't hold anyone back. The Irish Cultural Centre has plenty of free parking, a wooden dance floor and a CASH bar that sells excellent beer on tap or by the bottle (as well as other beverages). Licensed event. No partner needed, so rustle up a bunch of friends, or just bring yourself and your dancing shoes. Everyone welcome. Tickets online or $25 cash at the door, $20 under 25, and $15 12-17 yo. Tickets are not refundable but are transferable. Calgary Old-Time Experience organizes participatory, inclusive and one of a kind live music and dance events several times a year. We are supported in our efforts to bring old-time music and dance to Calgary by Nimblefingers Bluegrass and Old-Time Music Workshop and Festival as well as the Foothills Bluegrass Music Club.

The Zac Brown Band will spend the summer of 2019 touring in support of their forthcoming new album. The Owl Tour takes inspiration the great horned owl, an animal that can still see perfectly at night. Its sight allows the owl to be a guide, even in dark moments, and both Zac Brown Band's 2019 tour and the band's next album are inspired by the lore surrounding the creature.
