NFNGs are weekly 2-hour women’s groups that run at 15 different locations across Calgary. Our program is open to any woman born outside of Canada and registration is free. We also provide free, onsite child care. Weekly 2-hour workshops offer a safe and fun place for immigrant women to practice and improve English conversation, learn about life in Canada, build friendships with other women. NFNGs offer a welcoming space where there are no immigration requirements or pre-requisite skill level. The group leaders keep things interesting by planning discussion topics, guest speakers, games and many other activities! Some examples of workshops include budgeting, first aid, citizenship, parenting, recreation, health-care and many more! I am attaching the schedule for you to see if one or more of the groups will work for you. The program is a drop-in program so you don’t need to register ahead of time. If you need the childcare (free), call Debra at (403)-444-1752 or email debrac@ciwa-online.com

The Calgary Cat Association is a non-profit club affiliated with The International Cat Association (TICA) and we are located in Calgary, Alberta. Our members host cat shows annually in the city of Calgary.  Our next show is April 18/19, 2015 at the Frank McCool Arena. “This is a change from our traditional venue in Northwest Calgary’s Bowness community, but the Shouldice Arena will have ice on for the summer months, so our club needed to find a new location”. “We will miss our wonderful supporters in Bowness, but hope many will join us in the south for our spring show. We were welcomed by the Lake Bonavista and Acadia communities last fall and hope many of our spectators from September 2014 will return to see the new kitties that will feature in our spring show”  A cat show is a judged event where the owners of cats compete to win titles in various cat registering organizations by entering their cats to be judged after a breed standard. Both pedigreed and companion (or household pet HHP) cats are admissible, although the rules differ from organization to organization. Cats are compared to a breed standard, and the owners of those judged to be closest to it are awarded a prize. Often, at the end of the year, all of the points accrued at various shows are added up and additional national and regional titles are awarded. Also in the show hall you will find many vendors marketing their products that are for both human and feline use. Show Hours:  Saturday Judging from 9 am to 5 pm.  Sunday Judging from 8:30 am to 4 pm Admission Prices: $5 Adults; $2 for children 12 and under;  $3 for Seniors 65+ years.  Cash at door please. Inspiring Calgarians share their moving stories in adult foundational learning! It’s amazing what people can accomplish when provided the tools and the opportunities. Take Lesra Martin. As a child he was trapped in the harrowing, violent streets of Brooklyn NY. Illiterate and poor, he lived a life of little hope or promise. An unexpected friendship sparked an incredible saga that would take Lesra out of the inner city and into a new life in Canada. Lesra found the courage to face his fears, inspired in part by the book "The Sixteenth Round" by Rubin "The Hurricane" Carter, the searing account of his wrongful imprisonment for several murders. Taking heart from Carter's spirit in the face of extreme adversity, Lesra wrote the boxer, setting into motion a friendship that led to a five year fight that helped win Carter's release from prison. This inspiring story resulted in the book "Lazarus and The Hurricane." and Universal movie "The Hurricane” starring Denzel Washington. Along the way, Lesra fought to change his own life, undergoing his own miraculous transformation into a university honour student, law school graduate, attorney, and inspirational speaker. The Life of Learning Awards (LOLAs) celebrate amazing educators, adult learners and programs in Calgary. We will present the following awards:  Adult Learner for a learner at a foundational level who loves learning, stands out in his or her efforts to keep learning and inspires others by example.  Learning Champion for an educator/facilitator or program designer who makes a great contribution to community-based adult foundational learning and supports the essential skills development in learners.  Learning Communities for a learning program/project that stands out in innovation, effectiveness and breadth of reach into the adult foundational learning community.  Thanks A Bunch showcases a funder whose commitment and financial contribution help support the needs of adult foundational level learners.
