Every February, Heart & Stroke has our “Heart Month” canvass campaign nationwide, including right here in Calgary as well as other towns and cities in Southern Alberta. Join our team of volunteer canvassers to help share important information about heart disease and stroke with the community, as well as collect donations that contribute immensely to our mission. Essentially, this February 2020, you would have the entire month to find time to canvass an assigned route in your neighbourhood, or an area of the city you prefer. The routes typically take an hour or two to complete and you have the whole month to choose a time that best works for you. If you prefer to not knock on your neighbours doors, we have what’s called a “friends and family” kit, which is similar, but you would canvass people you know, such as your friends and family. Alternatively, you can also do what is called online canvassing. This is fundraising done online. you would have a personal fundraising page set up that you can provide a link to people who can support your fundraising efforts for Heart & Stroke. I would love to provide you with more information, if you have any questions, or to apply for this opportunity, please do not hesitate to reach out to Justin Leeson; justin.leeson@heartandstroke.ca or 403-351-7071. We look forward to hearing from you! Thank you!

Scorpio Theatre presents ‘The Burning Pestle’ by local award-winning playwright, Dan Gibbins from February 21 – 29, 2020. The second show in its 2019-2020 season, this show is the second in his series (‘Dying on Stage’). Sometime has passed since we saw the wheels go off the cart in Taranto Theatre with the cast and crew spinning in circles to try to get the play staged, but here we are again. It’s opening night for Taranto Theatre’s new play, a comedy of star-crossed lovers from house playwright Phil Payton. But when the donor whose grant is keeping the struggling company from bankruptcy decides she has some changes to suggest, Phil and the rest of the company must adapt, as their simple romance is complicated by the addition of a new character, an unpredictable knight… the knight of the Burning Pestle. Who embraces this new plot? Who fights against it? Can the company keep the story moving long enough to reach the curtain call?

There is a beautiful shift happening in the world. Women are stepping into their leadership and claiming their seats at the table. Taking the learnings from The Judy Project, it turns out leadership traits that might once have been seen as feminine flaws are now the ones leaders need. Traits such as compassion, honesty, generosity and authenticity – these all strengthen organizations rather than undermine them.Join us on Thursday February 27th at Modern Ocean from 11:30 – 1 pm as Katherine Emberly, President of Business, Brand and Communications at Shaw Communications shares her wisdom on 'Why We Need More Women in Leadership'. Katherine is responsible for leading the Shaw Business, Brand, Sponsorship and Internal Communications teams. Women in Leadership is a key passion of Katherine’s and she spends time speaking to and mentoring the next generation of female leaders in Canada. This private lunch brings leading women together. Inspired and guided by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi’s treasured setting of Stabat Mater, “The Lonesome Road” touches human journeys to explore, to exist, and to triumph over suffering and pain – Reaching into the skies or into the hearts of others, we examine the human desire to always push on for a better world. Through these journeys, we return to the lonesome journey of Mary, the mother, watching her only son die on the cross for the hope of all humanity. This concert will also feature our beloved pop-up ensemble “Man Enough to Sing” composed of Fathers, Family, and Friends from our community who are given the chance to explore their own musical journeys (many for the first time) as they take the stage to sing in support of Cantare Children’s Choir.

“To me, fair friend, you never can be old, For as you were when first your eye I eyed, Such seems your beauty still.” What if Romeo and Juliet had lived? This is the question posed in this delicate and profound “remix” of the greatest love story ever told. The premise is simple – rather than taking their own lives, the young lovers have grown old together, their dazzling love undimmed, to endure a tragedy of a different sort. Shakespeare’s timeless poetry creates a new, deeply romantic and powerful play, and a strikingly different love story. A TENDER THING is co-produced with The Shakespeare Company. The Chief Youth Courage Awards is a celebration of leadership and result. Hosted by Chief Constable Neufeld of the Calgary Police Service, we will honour Dick Haskayne’s leadership in philanthropy and business, and the gift his shoulders have provided to the youth in Calgary. As well, we will award six young citizens that have shown tremendous courage in their journey with the Calgary Police Foundation’s funded programs supporting our City’s most vulnerable youth. This elegant gala will feature an exclusive look into the Calgary Police Service, delicious drinks, interactive appetizer stations, dinner, and dessert, along with an exciting silent and live auction featuring amazing prizes and a performance by our musical guest, George Canyon! This event is also an excellent opportunity to network with some of Calgary’s most influential individuals while being inspired by our award recipients and guest speakers. All ticket proceeds from the gala benefit the Calgary Police Foundation – a charity that is dedicated to keeping kids safe from crime and victimization by funding Calgary Police Service programs that focus on education, prevention, and early intervention.

Trail Blazer Breakfast is the annual marquee fundraiser hosted by Calgary Homeless Foundation (CHF), that provides an opportunity to connect thought-leaders, innovators, philanthropists, influencers and entrepreneurs in Calgary – people who aren’t afraid to blaze new trails and leverage joint resources and expertise in order to collectively address the complex social issues of poverty and homelessness in our city. Keynote Speaker: Lieutenant-General (ret) The Honourable Roméo A. Dallaire As a military commander, humanitarian, senator or author, Roméo Dallaire has elevated our national consciousness. Whether shining a light on the atrocities of the Rwandan genocide; the struggle that he and many other military veterans face with post-traumatic stress disorder; or the recruitment and use of child soldiers, he has felt compelled to set aside his natural reserve to bring national and international attention to situations too often ignored. We invite you to be a part of this event and experience a true force of transformative action as he shares impactful leadership lessons and thoughts on the need for trailblazing in Canada - specifically in the areas of mental health and homelessness.
