1 in 3 Women, 1 in 5 Men in Canada will suffer an osteoporotic fracture in their lifetime Calgary residents can reduce their risk with a simple screening now available at the pharmacy. An Osteoporosis Screening Clinic is happening at London Drugs at Royal Oak Centre on September 24th. Affecting both men and women, and with no one single cause, pharmacists say Osteoporosis is a condition that more Calgary residents should undergo screening for. Approximately two million Canadians each year are affected by osteoporosis, which leads to an increase risk of fractures, often in the wrist, spine, shoulder and hip. One in three women and one in five men will suffer an osteoporotic fracture in their lifetime. Pharmacists now play an important role in osteoporosis prevention education, helping people understand their risk of developing Osteoporosis, before a fracture occurs. In fact, community pharmacist-initiated screening programs double the number of patients tested and treated for osteoporosis. London Drugs pharmacists provide patients with access to routine screening through Osteoporosis Screening Clinics held at pharmacies. Using the World Health Organization’s FRAX assessment tool and Sunlight Omnisense® device, pharmacists scan and measure patient’s bone strength of the wrist and assess their risk for falls and fractures. Post-screening, patients are given an assessment of their vitamin D and calcium intake, lifestyle factors, and existing medical conditions as they relate to fracture risk. Each patient is then provided with tips on how to minimize their risks, and a personalized action plan to fit their wellness goals. The complete consultation takes about 45-minutes. An Osteoporosis Screening Clinic is being held at London Drugs at Royal Oak Centre (8888 Country Hills Blvd NW) on Monday, September 24th from 11 am to 7pm. To learn more, view the complete clinic schedule or to book an appointment visit LondonDrugs.com/osteoclinics or call the pharmacy.

This fall, Eat North will present its 2018 Prairie Grid Dinner Series: From Dawn to Dusk — an innovative experience that, for a second year in a row, will see a new line-up of talented chefs collaborate on unique dinners in four cities across three provinces. The five-course dinner events will showcase locally harvested ingredients, regional cuisine, but also offer an immersive art experience for guests as well as one-of-a-kind creations, designed specifically for attendees of the traveling series to engage with, taste and sip. Participating chefs include JP Pedhirney (Bridgette Bar, Calgary); Steve Brochu (Chartier, Beaumont); Thayne Robstad and Beth Rogers (Hearth, Saskatoon); Mike Robins (Sous Sol, Winnipeg); and Jessica Young (Elements, Winnipeg). Each dinner event will consist of five courses developed collaboratively by the team of chefs. This year’s inspiration is the rising and setting of the sun, an artistic homage to the farmers who work from the early hours of the morning to late at night during harvest season. Both the food and visual art installations set-up during each dinner is meant to reflect the spectacular beauty of experiencing dawn to dusk in the Canadian Prairies. Calgary's dinner is set to take place at the stunning Calgary Shrine Centre on Thursday, September 27, 2018. Tickets are $140 which include a Big Rock Brewery cocktail hour with live music by Amy Thiessen followed by a five course dinner created by the collaborating chefs with drink pairings or $175, which includes the addition of a limited edition Prairie Grid t-shirt. $10 from each custom t-shirt sold will go towards Skipping Stone Foundation. As well, a silent auction will be set-up at the dinner, featuring a variety of custom wares featured throughout the Prairie Grid Dinner Series available for bidding. The proceeds from these auction items will also go to the same charity. Join the conversation on Instagram and Twitter using the dinner series hashtags: #PrairieGrid2018 and #proudtobeprairie.

Morpheus Theatre presents ‘Unnecessary Farce’ by Paul Slade Smith from September 28 to October 6, 2018. The first show in its 2018-2019 season, it tells the tale of two wannabe cops who hatch a plan to show they have what it takes to get on the police force – but even the best laid plans go astray. Bumbles and fumbles occur, resulting in hilarity and chaos! Come join us for this show! This is Eric and Billie’s chance. They have this one opportunity to prove they have what it takes to become full-fledged members of the police force. The hotel rooms are booked, the recording equipment is set up and functional. The informant has been prepped and the suspect is on his way. It’s all quite simple and straightforward. So naturally, it all goes catastrophically, ridiculously wrong. This side-splittingly funny season opener will have you giggling and rooting for our two wannabe cops from the moment we meet them. They are surrounded by a colorful cast of characters including Karen, who can’t seem to keep her clothes on, Frank, a cowardly security officer, and sweet, kind Mayor Meekly, who just can’t seem to get his meeting started no matter what he does, or what door he tries. This show is guaranteed to have you laughing out loud as we witness bumble after bumble, and bagpipes…did we already mention the bagpipes? Join us for this hilarious first show of our 2018-2019 season!

This ‘comedy about a tragedy’ tells the tale of Jessica, an insecure actor who sent into a tailspin when cast in the lead role. ‘Women Playing Hamlet’ by William Missouri Downs provides a unique opportunity for the Calgary theatre community in that it showcases an all-female cast performing multiple roles, and primarily all-female crew – including director, stage management and other behind the scenes artists. "Hamlet’s a challenge for any actor, but when Jessica is cast as the titular character in a New York production, it sends her into an existential tailspin. It doesn’t help that her acting coach is borderline abusive, or that every Starbucks barista with an MFA tells her she’s too young for the role. Or that she’s somehow managed to make Sir Patrick Stewart her nemesis. Not to mention the fact that she’s a woman. How can Jessica figure out “to be or not to be,” when she can’t even figure out herself?" Wednesday to Saturday: 7:30 p.m. Saturday & Sunday matinees: 2:00 p.m. Tickets: www.scorpio.ca/tickets/ Group rates are available on purchases of 10 or more Adult tickets; for inquiries about the show and tickets, please contact boxoffice@scorpio.ca _________ About Scorpio Theatre: Scorpio Theatre is a volunteer, non-profit community theatre group devoted to showcasing new works from the fringe of the dramatic world. While Scorpio initially specialized in original comedies, our mandate has grown to include all manner of plays that are new to Calgary audiences, with a focus on local playwrights. Our goal is to create conversation and elicit two-way dialogue with our audience – love or hate it, we want you to walk away feeling impacted and thinking about the show. Scorpio presents a night at the theatre unlike anything else in the city.

The Unsyncables, an entertaining play written by Rebecca Merkley, is the story of three young synchronized swimmers who rise to the top — unless, of course, they’ve forgotten their water wings. The clunky Juniper, Mary and Olga can’t even manage to sync up a high five. With plenty of obstacles in the way, the three set out to win a medal at the annual Insyncathon. Unfortunately, their friendship is put to the test when Mary runs into her old teammate Twyla, who is determined to make waves. The Unsyncables received a Sterling Nomination for Best Fringe Production and enthusiastic media and patron reviews.

Get into the music! “I adore Martin’s trembling vibrato and rough tough rocker sensibility.  A modern feisty Joan Jett:  she looks cool,  acts cool,  sings cool.  A proper rockstar.”—Americana UK “I haven’t shaken the need to write about the darker things that are part of our human journey”, confides Christina Martin, “but,  I’m writing about faith and love more than ever with songs like Keep Me Calm and Always Reminding. Combining good taste, passionate singing, and thoughtful lyrics, “Impossible To Hold”, Christina’s sixth and strongest studio album, is where music and poetry meet, achieving a perfect balance between organic ambience and impeccable production. Christina began writing and recording her own music while slogging it out on Texas bar scene. A multi-award-winning singer/songwriter, she has been relentlessly recording and touring in Canada, the UK, and Europe, building connections the old-fashioned way—at venues big and small—singing songs about loss, love and perseverance that have been featured in films and on television. Christina has performed at music festivals around the world including Rolling Stone Weekender Festival, Belfast Nashville Songwriters Festival, International Folk Alliance, Reeperbahn Festival, and Canadian Music Week.

Jake’s Gift is a surprisingly funny, multi award-winning drama about a Canadian WW2 veteran’s reluctant return to Normandy, France for the 60th Anniversary of D-Day. While roaming the shores of Juno Beach, Jake encounters Isabelle, a precocious 10 year old from the local village whose inquisitive nature and charm challenge the old soldier to confront some long-ignored ghosts. At its heart, Jake’s Gift is about the legacy of remembrance and personalizes the story behind one soldier’s grave. The Wardens’ mountain music is a piece of Canada reflecting the pristine wilderness of the Rocky Mountains. With haunting three-part harmonies, Scott Ward (guitar), Bradley Bischoff (guitar) and Ray Schmidt (bass/mandolin) share stories drawing on 60+ years of fiercely protecting Canada’s most prized landscapes. The Wardens are the real deal; their careers have seen them get dangerously close to grizzly bears (Wheels on The Wildlife Trap), fight devastating forest fires (Backfire) and take part in the historic return of the buffalo to Banff National Park in 2017 (Sleeping Buffalo). They preserve heroic tales from park history (Lantern Heart, Troop Train and The Ballad of Bill Neish) and look to nature and landscape as muse (Across The River). A rare look into nature and the soul of the Rocky Mountains, The Wardens’ original songs and stories are an essential part of Canada. The comedian, actor, and best-selling author Sebastian Maniscalco is giving a concert in our city as a part of his Stay Hungry 2018 Tour. Let's face it: in our increasingly tepid, polite, and politically correct culture we need more people like Sebastian Maniscalco. Forever able to seize the moment, never failing to speak his mind, always telling it like it is, this is one man who isn't afraid to put it all out there. Yes, the Chicago-area born, Italian-immigrant-raised comedian behind wildly successful network specials including 2016's Why Would You Do That?, 2014's Aren't You Embarrassed?, and 2012's What's Wrong With People?, is that little voice within all our heads. The one we are too timid to unleash. Maniscalco is bearing the burden of our bizarre and head-scratching modern-day world. Enjoy this wonderful show in an intimate setting. Only 70 seats available for this performance! Tanner James is one of the last great Canadian storytellers who is proud to carry on the oral storytelling tradition. His songs are about the people he meets and places he’s been; they are gut-wrenchingly funny and heartbreakingly confessional. Punk rock taught him how to do-it-yourself, indie rock taught him how to think outside the box, while roots music is where he always knew he would end up. Most of all, James is a songwriter who can move an audience around and make them laugh and cry within minutes.

The California Guitar Trio (CGT) and the Montreal Guitar Trio (MG3) fuse over 40 years of combined performing experience into one unique six-by-six-string ‘phenomensemble’. In a pleasantly surprising way, CGT's steel stringed-guitars blend naturally with MG3's nylon-stringed guitars, as each trios fret boards chase the others' original compositions and new arrangements of progressive rock, world, jazz and classical music. Bad weather has affected this year’s climbing season, and now multiple expeditions are attempting to summit Everest on the same day. A bottleneck of climbers has delayed the progress of Rob Hall’s group, and he now finds himself near the top of the mountain with his client Doug Hansen, long after the agreed turnaround time has passed. Unbeknown to the two mountaineers, a ferocious storm is brewing below. Meanwhile, further down the mountain, another of Rob’s clients, Beck Weathers, lies unconscious as the storm rages around him. Everest the opera will move, inspire and enthrall you. We have three showings of Everest: Saturday, February 2nd, 2019 at 7:30 PM Wednesday, February 6th, 2019 at 7:30 PM Friday, February 8th, 2019 at 7:30 PM Tickets starting at $36.00 Student and Senior (65+) rates apply in select areas.
