Grandmaster Strongman Dennis Rogers will be joining us, LIVE and in person, for Men’s Night on Saturday, September 12th. Come see Dennis bend the unbendable! Learn how to maximize your body strength, as Dennis teaches us how he pushes his body to the limits. Bring out your family and friends for a night designed just for the guys! Tickets are $10.00 per adult and $5.00 per youth. ----- Dennis Rogers is a retired arm-wrestling champion and current Grandmaster Strongman who travels the world performing incredible feats of strength. Between his live and televised appearances it is estimated that a minimum of 300 million people in 156 countries have seen him perform. He is not an illusionist. The authenticity of his powerful feats have been verified by strength historians and officials throughout the world, as well as through field tests via the Discovery Channel, National Geographic and The History Channel. In 2004 he decided that he wanted to share his training secrets and techniques with others to keep the oldetime strongman tradition alive. Through this vision, Oldetime Strongman University was birthed. Today he has successful students all over the world. Dennis is a former (retired) US Open, National and World Arm-Wrestling Champion, recipient of the A.O.B.S. Super-Strength Athlete Award (1993, for preventing (2) US Air Force T-34 Aircraft from taking off), was named Pound-for Pound the World’s Strongest Man (“for the feats performed” -1998 by the Association of Oldetime Barbell and Strongmen, and in 2006 by Ripley’s Believe It or Not!), called the World’s Best (performing) Strongman by Oprah (2003) and was recently presented the Vic Boff Award: the A.O.B.S. Highest achievement Award, on October 23, 2010.

The Kidney Foundation of Canada is proud to host its 6th annual Kidney March. On September 11-13, 2015, an expected 300 Marchers and Crew will make the unforgettable 3 day, 100 km walk from Kananaskis Country to Calgary. Our scenic journey begins at the Millarville Race Track and ends at Canada Olympic Park. Kidney disease affects 1 in 10 Canadians. Our goal for Kidney March is to raise awareness by raising historic amounts of money for the cause. To date, we have already raised over $3.7 million through Kidney March to support kidney disease prevention, lifesaving research, patient support programs, and organ donation initiatives. Kidney March also creates a sense of community for people affected by this disease. There’s still time to sign up as a Marcher or Crew member. Visit kidneymarch.ca to learn more. Feel free to come out and cheer for our Marchers. Thank you for your support!

Calgary’s fastest growing and most innovative adult learning group will go city wide when it touches down at Triwood Community Association on September 14. The Calgary Association of Lifelong Learners (CALL) is holding a Gala Cafe that afternoon from 4:00-6:30 to launch its fifth year of program offerings. In addition to stimulating conversation the Gala Café is a perfect opportunity to learn about CALL programs, as well as to join or renew your membership. The festivities will include drinks and snacks, highlighted by a talk by Aritha van Herk. Writing Alberta: the Challenges of a Slippery Subject How are our unique experiences and our political, social, and cultural events documented and portrayed in words right now? Is it possible to encapsulate in words the variable aspects of Calgary and Alberta in any rich and satisfying way? What are the challenges of writing about the local, the regional, and the provincial in a place so chameleonic that it eludes any ready distillation? How can the surprising shifts and U-turns of this province be read in terms of their reflection of this place? In writing her popular history, Mavericks, Aritha van Herk discovered elements of Alberta’s stories that defied logic, incited curiosity and frustrated depiction. Her explorations into the way that Alberta is read and realized have brought her to a space where she considers every depiction of Alberta with an affectionately skeptical eye. Aritha van Herk is the author of five novels, Judith, The Tent Peg, No Fixed Address, Places Far From Ellesmere (a geografictione) and Restlessness. Her irreverent but relevant history of Alberta, Mavericks: An Incorrigible History of Alberta, won the Grant MacEwan Author’s Award for Alberta Writing and frames the permanent exhibition on Alberta history that opened at the Glenbow Museum and Archives in Calgary in 2007. With George Webber she has published In This Place: Calgary 2004-2011 (Photographs by George Webber, Words by Aritha van Herk) and most recently, Prairie Gothic.

One of the world’s most original and eclectic spectacles of art, science and engineering, will erupt this September 16-20 when the third annual Beakerhead hits the streets and venues of Calgary, Alberta. Look for mechanical creatures, multi-story art installations, famous and soon-to-be famous scientists and inventors, and performances by people and machines. The dose of quirky spectacle that is coming to be associated with this annual five-day event will include more than 60 events, including: Station B: The hub and “playground for human ingenuity” at Fort Calgary, with a larger-than-life (fits 400 comfortably!) sandbox, and The Claw, a massive 30‐foot high version of the arcade-style crane game. Open daily from September 16 to 20. A String (Theory) of Incredible Encounters: A sequence of public engineered artworks from 17th Avenue SW, Inglewood, Victoria Park, East Village to Kensington and Downtown Calgary. Open daily from September 16 to 20. Opening Night: An outdoor musical kick‐off at Fort Calgary with GZA, science advocate and rapper with the Grammy‐nominated group Wu-Tang Clan, on Wednesday, September 16. The Gorgeous Molecule: A sublime food and cocktail lab experience in the historic Barron Building, on Thursday, September 17. Four-to-Six: Encounters with creative and somewhat nerdy buskers on Stephen Avenue Walk after work and school on Wednesday, September 16 to Friday, September 18 of Beakerhead. Engineered Eats: Restaurants across the city delighting you with the science of eggs. Foam-topped gimlet, anyone? Daily from September 16 to 20. Rock n’ Roll History of Space Exploration: The international premiere of a live visual and musical journey through space exploration! Two shows, September 17 and 18. Beakernight: A massive street spectacle on a four‐block stretch of 10 Ave SW with fire-erupting skee ball, rocket ship crane rides, 3D projection musical parties and hands‐on encounters with technology, on Saturday, September 19.

Salim and Sulaiman are among India's most respected composers, having scored more than 100 films including Kurbaan, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, Fashion, Band Baaja Baaraat, Aaja Nachle, Heroine, around 20 TV shows and composed several records incorporating cinematic, folk, electronica and sufi influences into their music. They've also composed for Broadway musicals such as 'Merchants of Bollywood' and 'Beyond Bollywood'. Their latest and much awaited Hollywood film 'Sold' has recently been gaining appreciation from critics at various film festivals. Salim and Sulaiman have enthralled audiences across the world with their live concerts including performing at the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup 2010. Their songs have been said to be very inspirational, most notably their sports anthem 'Chak De India'. Salim and Sulaiman have been guests on several TV reality shows as celebrity judges including the very popular Indian Idol. The brothers also received the Best Music award for the film 'Fashion' at New York’s Syracuse International Film Festival as well as Filmfare, Zee Cine, IIFA, Screen and several other award shows. They were also nominated for a daytime Emmy Award for their composition 'Save the Tiger - Wonder Pets' and continue to compose all over the world including their latest collaborations with Lady Gaga and Enrique Iglesias on their singles Born This Way and I'm a Freak, respectively. Indian music has considerably evolved in part thanks to the incredible efforts of Salim and Sulaiman. The brothers fuse traditional hindi melodies with newer styles of music using instruments that span the globe. Their familiarity with music began at a very young age as the brothers’ father was a popular composer in India. Salim later mastered the piano at Trinity College of Music in London while Sulaiman took up tabla training with such legends as Taufiq Qureshi and Ustad Zakir Hussain.

This is an intimate event and seats are limited. Tickets are now available for $100 each, with all proceeds supporting Grow Calgary. Last year’s dinner sold-out and raised more than $6,000 towards seeding for the 2015 harvest.

The CIBC Run for the Cure is a 5k or 1k walk or run that raises funds for Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. It is the largest single-day, volunteer-led event in Canada in support of the breast cancer research. The CIBC Run for the Cure will take place on Sunday, October 4, 2015 in more than 60 communities across Canada. Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosis in Canadian women, with one in four cancer diagnoses being breast cancer. An estimated 24,400 Canadian women (and 210 Canadian men) were diagnosed in Canada in 2014. Thanks to events like CIBC Run for the Cure, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF) has been able to fund groundbreaking research, health education and advocacy initiatives that have contributed to improvements in early detection through mammography screening, advances in screening technology and improved cancer treatments. As a result, fewer Canadian women are dying from breast cancer today than ever before – since their peak in 1986, breast cancer deaths have decreased by 43 percent. By Ellery Queen DECEIT & MURDER It’s 1940, and there is nowhere in the country seemingly more charming than Wrightsville. The Depression has abated, and the New England town is booming once again. There is hope in Wrightsville, but Ellery Queen has come looking for death. The mystery author is hoping for fodder for a novel, and he senses the corruption that lurks beneath the apple-pie façade. A jinxed house, poisonings and murder are all on the menu, as Queen sits back, waiting for crime to come to him… Calamity Town by Ellery Queen is used with the express permission of The Frederic Dannay Literary Property Trust, The Manfred B. Lee Family Literary Property Trust and their representatives, Jabberwocky Literary Agency, Inc

Downstage | Calgary, AB A MOVING STORY ABOUT FAMILY AND THE ENVIRONMENT Phineas William Walsh has an encyclopaedic knowledge of the natural world. What he doesn’t understand, though, is why his parents can’t live together – after all, when other mate-for-life animals have a fight, it’s not like one of them just packs his bags and leaves the country. To make things worse, Phin is worried sick about what humans are doing to the planet. So, when a White’s Tree Frog ends up in an aquarium in his fourth-grade classroom, it’s the last straw. My Family and Other Endangered Species is a funny, imaginative and moving play incorporating inventive puppetry. Recommended for Ages 12+

Adapted by Craig Hall, Haysam Kadri and Anna Cummer A SUPERNATURAL THRILLER Prophecies. Ambition. Murder. Madness. In Shakespeare’s famously cursed play Macbeth, darkness and evil abound. After an encounter with three witches on a battlefield, Macbeth must make a decision that will change the course of his life. Betrayal, love, bloodshed and tragedy adorn his path in this chilling, supernatural tale, leaving us wondering how far Macbeth will go to get what he wants.
