The Calgary Civic Symphony continues to showcase the brightest of Calgary’s young musical talents, the winners of the 2017 Calgary Concerto Competition (C3): Angela Ryu, violin (17 years), Jessica Ma, piano (14 years), Joan Herget, cello (15 years) and Joshua Wong, piano (13 years). Music selected by our young musicians includes the following: Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 35 (1st mvmnt) Liszt Piano Concerto No. 1 in E Flat Major Elgar Cello Concerto in E Minor, Op. 85 (4th mvmnt) Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 1 (1st mvmnt) Maestro Rolf Bertsch conducts the Civic as we launch the concert performing Berlioz’s ever-popular Carnaval Romain followed by the works of Elgar and Tchaikovsky; after intermission we will be treated to the Rachmaninoff, and the concert will be brought to a rousing conclusion with the Liszt performance. Not every child is an athlete and some invest countless hours honing their musical craft. The C3 Committee organizes the competition every year and the Calgary Civic Symphony dedicates a concert to showcase the winners and introduce them to Calgary audiences. These rising stars will perform with the Civic on Sunday, April 2nd at 2:30 pm, at the Jack Singer Concert Hall. A Pre-concert recital with the competition runners-up will take place in the lobby at 1:45 pm. The Calgary Civic Symphony was founded in 1975 as Calgary’s volunteer orchestra. Over the years, the Civic has swelled to over 80 musicians. With an interesting diversity in professions, its members come together each week to rehearse complex orchestral works. Under the baton of Artistic Director and Conductor Rolf Bertsch, the Symphony shapes and polishes performances that are truly brilliant! In fact, the Civic is often confused with Calgary’s other—but professional—orchestra.

ABOUT THE SHOW Recounting a detailed memory from growing up in Norway, interpreted through movement, Fall of the Leaf takes to an intimate theatre setting to delve into urban contemporary dance. The show, Høsten Bladet, in Norwegian, expresses the curiosity that buds from reliving a memory of the distant past. Inspired by the natural behaviours of wind, Artistic Director, Jason Galeos of J-SIK Movements explores how wind encounters objects, creating pockets of swirling force and turbulence. How can our communities address issues such as inactivity, sedentary behaviour, stress, anxiety, and depression, amongst many others? Healthy communities cannot exist outside of healthy ecosystems and if we feel connected to our environment we will be motivated to protect it. However, not everyone has equal access to a healthy lifestyle. Do our communities offer walkability, good access to public transportation, recreation facilities, green spaces, community centres and gardens? How can we ensure opportunities for everyone to engage in their own well-being? Join our panel of experts for a roundtable discussion that explores the future of health over the next 20 years in Calgary and beyond. Our speakers will address a variety of issues around health and well-being in southern Alberta’s communities. If you’re interested in your health, and that of your community, this is an event for you! To learn more and register, visit http://ucalgary.ca/sustainability/speakerseries

Get into the music After a burglary at their rental home in England, Rob and Sarah Skinner decided to take inspiration from despair and write about how they felt. ‘Home Sweet Home’ received such positive press and airplay that the Skinners were able to purchase their own property. Red Dirt Skinners were the first band in history to receive awards from both British Blues and British Country Music. Don’t pigeonhole the Skinners though. With influences of folk, country, blues, Americana, and jazz, fans describe them as ‘refreshingly different’. The Skinners have comfortably blended exceptional, almost telepathic, harmonies with the unique instrumentation of Sarah’s soprano saxophone and Rob’s acoustic guitar on 5 albums.

Classically trained from age 6, Sarah won Instrumentalist of the Year at the British Blues Awards in 2014 and the first female artist to be endorsed by Trevor James Saxophones. “The entire crew were so impressed with both their musicianship and their engaging personalities. We look forward to their next visit.” Breakfast Television, Montreal FB https://www.facebook.com/events/401319336912323

Friday evening 7 - 9 pm Saturday and Sunday 9 - 5:30 pm Dr. Richard Jelusich presented “Plant Medicine” with his dear brother Miguel Angel Vergara in Merida, Mexico, in 2013. Since then Dr. Jelsucih has worked with Teresa Helgeson at the Blue Sky Retreat in San Diego realizing that the world really is working to find a pure connection back to Mother Earth. Awakening to Plant Consciousness brings this together by aligning likeminded individuals in one place to share and explore. Dr. Richard Jelusich invites you to come participate in the Awakening to Plant Consciousness Conference in Calgary! This is the time of the awakening of our being to the connectedness of all things. Our key note speaker, Miguel Angel Vergara, Master Teacher, Mayan Shaman and former director of Chichen Itza, will joined by teachers and wisdom-keepers from Canada, the U.S. and Mexico, to present their research and inner explorations. In this three day conference of consciousness, you will learn how plants communicate and “speak.” You will also become versed in the true nature of plant medicine, the consciousness of plants and how to communicate with them. In addition, you will be exposed to herbs and remedies, how to choose medicinal and edible nature plants where you live, and much more. http://lightnews.org/awakening-to-plant-consciousness-june-23-25-2017-calgary-ab/
