PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
The Cambrian Heights Community Association Board and I hope you all had a Happy New Year and wish everyone the best of luck and success in 2008!
As our community association closes 2007 and moves into 2008 we would like to look back and highlight some of 2007’s important events and activities.
DOG PARK SURVEY AND TOWN HALL MEETINGS
In 2007 we held 2 town hall meetings, and circulated a survey to collect information from our community and users of the open space at the north east comer of 10th Street and 32nd Avenue. We often refer to this area as the “Dog Park”. The Dog Park was also discussed at our annual general meeting in April.
Feedback from survey responses and our community meetings gave us a great deal of information to consider on issues such as trees, a 32nd Avenue fence, benches, weed control, grass maintenance, and traffic safety concerns.
Over 70% of the people responding to our survey, and many comments received during our town hall meetings, supported construction of a fence along 32nd Avenue. We would like to thank Aaron Taylor, our City of Calgary Community Recreation Coordinator, for his assistance in seeing this fence completed in 2007.
Traffic safety concerns along 32nd Avenue were raised and noted by our Board. In 2008 we would like to carry these concerns forward and discuss traffic volume, speed, and safety issues with the City of Calgary.
Thank-you to everyone that completed a survey, and provided comments at our town hall meetings. We hope to have a survey feedback summary report available for community residents and dog park users early in 2008.
COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION CASINO
We would like to thank all the volunteers that came out over the July 1st long weekend to make our 2007 casino fund raiser a huge success!
Casinos provide a significant source of funds for our Community Association. These funds give us the resources to maintain our community centre, and financially support local community projects.
In 2007 one of these projects saw the construction of a new playground at the Cambrian Heights Elementary School. The new playground is accessible by children and parents with mobility challenges. We would like to recognize and thank Derek Manns and all the parent volunteers from Cambrian Heights Elementary school that worked together is make this project a reality. The new playground is a valuable addition to the school and our community.
FAMILY ICE RINK
We would like to pass on our thanks to Mitch Weber and his group of volunteers for providing Cambrian Heights with another family ice rink this year. The ice rink is located behind our Community Centre at 600 Northmount Drive NW. The rink is used by children and adults of all ages, and is equipped with lights for late afternoon and evening skating. HALLOWEEN FAMILY DANCE
In 2007 we were able to continue our tradition of hosting a community Halloween Family Dance. The dance brought out another year of excellent adult and children’s costumes and gave families a safe and secure event to celebrate Halloween.
Volunteers make this event possible by helping with hall decoration, ticket taking, prizes, serving food and beverages, and hall clean-up. Thank-you all!
COMMUNITY CENTRE CAPITAL PROJECTS
Our Community Association undertook two major capital projects in 2007.
In Spring we replaced the roofing of our Community Centre to improve drainage and maintain the building. August saw new flooring installed in our main hall.
Our first capital projects under consideration for 2008 include improved lighting and new window coverings in our main hall.
LOOKING FORWARD INTO 2008…
Our community association’s annual general meeting (AGM) is planned for Tuesday, April 29th.
Between now and than traffic safety at the Dog Park along 32nd Avenue, completion of a Dog Park survey summary report, and several community centre capital projects are some of activities our Board will be engaged with.
Your questions, comments, and feedback are welcome. Our Community Associations email address is chca.mail@shaw.ca
Thank you again to all the volunteers that made 2007 in Cambrian Heights another year of promise and success!
