President’s Message

Cambrian Heights Community Association

May 2009

After months of waiting, the City has provided the much-anticipated results of our Community Needs Assessment Survey to us!  Perhaps what was somewhat surprising was the number of completed surveys that were returned.  Out of approximately 380 surveys that were distributed, only 48 were filled out, which works out to only about a 13% participation rate.  Apparently, for a survey of this nature, it is common to only get about a 20% participation rate, so perhaps it means that everyone in Cambrian Heights is happy with their community!

Certainly, most people enjoyed living here because of the location and its proximity to downtown, shopping, and good transit routes.  What was wonderful to hear was that a good majority of people liked living here because of the friendly people, and the large number of residents who have lived here for a long time. Most people also appreciated the open spaces and large trees of this neighbourhood, and placed a lot of value on being within walking distance to schools and places of worship.  When asked about what community means, the majority of people responded that people working together and sharing common interests was what made a community.

So, while it appears that most people living here are relatively content with the area, there are some concerns that the CHCA might be able to approach.  Many respondents mentioned the desire to have more programs within walking distance, such as seniors’ programs, indoor activities and children’s programs.  As the Board continues to work on proposals for an expanded hall facility, we hope that we will be able to provide space for these programs to occur in the future.

Also, the number one concern for a number of people was safety.  Currently, we do not have a Block Watch volunteer who could regularly summarize the Calgary Police Community information in the newsletter, and organize safety seminars.  However, given the number of people who are concerned with neighbourhood security, I will do my best to provide more regular updates.

Thank you to everyone who filled out the survey and provided us with your feedback, it was much appreciated!  We on the Board will endeavor to put this information to its best use in guiding the direction taken by the CHCA into the future!
