Block Watch Co-ordinator

  • Check Calgary Police Service web site for monthly crime stats and write a short newsletter article on crime in the neighbourhood.
  • Contact the Community Liaison officer to find out about any public alerts to pass on to the community through the newsletter.
  • Work with the community social worker and Calgary Police Service to hold an annual community safety talk on any timely-topic (guest speakers, Calgary Police Service presentation, etc.).
  • Attend occasional Board meetings as required to gain assistance in organizing the safety talk.
  • Time commitment - 1 hour / month plus 6 hours for annual safety talk.

 

 

Treasurer In-Training

  • Work with current treasurer in order to learn how to be a treasurer for a non-profit society.
  • Attend all Board meetings with treasurer.
  • Become a signing authority for the Cambrian Heights Community Association.
  • Be willing to take on full treasurer responsibilities for one year, and be willing to train new treasurer when the time comes.
  • Time commitment - 3 - 6 hours per week.

 

 

Christmas Gingerbread House Building Community Event

  • NEW IDEA!!!
  • Go shopping for gingerbread kits and suitable candy and icing for decoration.
  • Create advertisements for the event for the newsletter.
  • Take registrations for the event.
  • Assist other volunteers in setting up and running the event.
  • Attend Board meetings in October, November and December to keep Board members appraised of, and to get assistance with event organization.
  • Time commitment - 2 hours per week October through December, plus 6 hours for event.

 

 

Community Eco Action Team

  • NEW IDEA!!!
  • Work with a group of people to develop this idea into something amazing!
  • Develop Eco Action Initiatives that are of interest to you and the group.
  • Potential to work with neighbouring communities.
  • Time commitment - 3-4 hours per month initially, after that?????

 

 

Halloween Dance Community Event

  • Work with a team of volunteers to organize and run this popular event.
  • Group is responsible for shopping for prizes, decorating the hall, hiring a DJ, and planning all family activities for the evening.
  • Help with set up and clean up.
  • Time commitment - 2 hours per week September through October, 6 hours day of event (October).

 

 

Good Food Box / Community Kitchen

  • NEW IDEA!!!
  • Look into the possibility of establishing either or both programs in our community.
  • Inquire with neighbouring communities that have these programs (eg. Huntington Hills) about how the programs work, what facilities are required, what the volunteer commitment would be, etc.
  • Work with the Board to determine if there is support for one or both initiatives within our community.
  • Willingness either to head up the program, or assist with finding other volunteers to work on it.
  • Time commitment - 1 to 2 hours per week in fact finding, attend one Board meeting to present results, possibility of further time commitment depending on situation.

 

 

Community Garden / Community Compost Program

  • NEW IDEA!!!
  • Work with a group of like-minded individuals to find out how and where Cambrian Heights could establish its first community garden.
  • Possibility of teaming up with the school in the establishment of both the garden and a community compost program.
  • Possibility of working with the City in creation of both programs.
  • Willingness to conduct fact-finding work for the remainder of this growing season, with the goal to begin one or both programs starting in spring 2010.
  • Time commitment - 2 hours per week for growing season 2009, 5+ hours per week starting in Spring 2010.

 

 

Paint the Pavement Community Event

  • Be a part of the team who will judge art submissions.
  • Assist in gathering materials (paint, brushes, etc.), organizing food and drinks and entertainment for the day of the painting.
  • Willingness to assist in obtaining necessary City permits and what not for day of event.
  • Assist with participants the day of the event.
  • Time commitment - 1 hour per week now through August, 6 hours day of event.

 

Clean and Green Day Community Event

  • Work with a group of volunteers at the event on Saturday, June 13th.
  • Assist with collecting e-cycling materials from people and placing them into proper bins.
  • Assist with directing traffic and answering questions.
  • Assist with plant exchange.
  • Assist with set up and clean up of hall before and after the event.
  • You would be able to attend both workshops, and get fed!
  • Time commitment - 6 hours day of event.

 

 

Community ‘Commons’ / Community Art Initiative

  • NEW IDEA!!!
  • Examine green spaces currently within the community with the potential for development into common ‘bumping places’.
  • Examine potential spaces for community art installations.
  • Work with the City in creating public green spaces that incorporate ‘smart’, water wise landscaping and art.
  • Willingness to fill out applicable grant applications.
  • Willingness to communicate to a variety of donors on behalf of the Community Association.
  • Attendance at occasional Board meetings to keep the Board up to date.
  • Willingness to write newsletter articles and speak at community Open Houses when necessary.
  • Time commitment - 3 hours per week.

 

 

Block Party / Chili Cook-off Community Event

  • NEW IDEA!!!
  • Work with a group to plan and organize Cambrian Heights first ever block party / chili cook-off
  • Willingness to seek grant funding for entertainment.
  • Plan family entertainment for event.
  • Educate neighbours about the event in order to facilitate street closure for part of a day.
  • Participate in the event.
  • Time commitment - 3 hours per week from now through event (July).

 

 

Community Charity Golf Tournament

  • NEW IDEA!!!
  • Plan and organize the Cambrian Heights first-ever charity golf tournament.
  • Organize the location, choose a charity, organize registration for the event as well as prizes, entertainment and food.
  • Organize and administer registration for the event.
  • Assist with the running of the event.
  • Attendance at the occasional Board meeting as required to inform the Board of progress.
  • Creation of advertising for the event in the community newsletter.

Time commitment - 2 hours per week initially, 3 to 5 hours closer to the event, 7 hours day of event.
