CONNECTING VARSITY’ REPORT The “Connecting Varsity – People, Places and Pathways” committee of the Varsity Community Association (VCA) are working on the first phase of this project. We plan to install an “Entryway” at 53 Street and Varsity Estates Drive N.W., as well as creating “Gathering Places” at Varsity Estates Drive and Varsity Estates Road NW (by the soccer field), the Gulley (across from Silver Springs Golf Course) on 53rd Street NW and the smaller park area at 53rd Street and 40 Ave NW. We have picked these areas as the initial phase, as VCA and the City are now working on the 53 Street Enhancement Program and we are able to work in conjunction with them. The designs created in this first phase will be continued throughout the community. The Entryway and a Gathering Place at Varsity Drive and Shaganappi Trail NW will be the next phase. We hope to create Gathering Places for people to meet while walking, biking, etc along our pathways. These Gathering Places will likely have benches, low maintenance landscaping, artwork and signage. VCA and the City have been working on the 53 Street Enhancement Program, partially due to the possibility of increased traffic along 53rd Street where so many people and students walk. The medians are in place and the bike paths will be marked when weather permits. We are in need of more volunteers for the Connecting Varsity project, as this will be a community-wide effort.
