“CONNECTING VARSITY” REPORT The “Connecting Varsity – People, Places and Pathways” committee of the Varsity Community Association (VCA) are now working on the Entryways as Phase 2 of Connecting Varsity. This phase is to see the completion of Varsity signage and landscaping at five entry points to the community. The first one to be completed will be at 53 Street and Varsity Estates Drive N.W. where the current sign is deteriorating. There will be one on north and southbound Shaganappi Trail, one at Home Road and 32nd Ave, and another at 40th Ave east of 37th St. A fund raising campaign for this phase is needed as we proceed with the design and installation. The completion of Phase 1 sees the the five “Gathering Places” now in place. They are located at Varsity Estates Drive and Varsity Estates Road by the soccer field, at the gully on 53 St. across from the Silver Springs Golf Course, at 53rd Street and 40 Ave, at Varsity Drive and 37 St., and by the church across Shaganappi from the 7-Eleven. Each Gathering Place has two memorial benches, low maintenance landscaping, and a waste receptacle. These are spread throughout the community and are restful and safe places where residents and visitors can meet and rest as they enjoy our pathways throughout the community. A map brochure has been distributed that shows measured walking/cycling routes and indicates where there are other rest areas. The committee is seeking a government grant so that a community participation public art sculpture can be created at each of these Gathering Places. The theme at each will reflect the activity most enjoyed at that site. Our committee still needs volunteers for this Varsity project that will enrich our whole community. If you can help as a fundraiser, a project manager, a committee member or have suggestions please contact VCA or Jan Geggie at 403-286-9823. Everyone is welcome. |
