École Varsity Acres School: "stretching for success: toujours plus haut!" By Lucille Dupuis Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the doors of that big building on the corner of Varsity Drive and 42 Street? Do you know that you have a fully bilingual school offering a K-6 program, right in your community? École Varsity Acres School has been offering a top notch educational program for many years now, complete with multicultural assemblies, outdoor pursuits, artists in residence, leadership activities for grade six students, environmental clubs and many student-driven community partnerships or charity activities.
This year, so far, our students have given 384 pounds of food to the Christmas food bank and another 687 items at Valentine's Day for sharing of our hearts and good fortune with others. Students held a raffle and raised $434 for Inn From the Cold for winter relief for the homeless. They collected, filled, and gave 49 Christmas boxes and $210 to Samaritan's Purse for Operation Christmas Child, and community activities still continue to emerge! We believe in developing caring, participating members of society who will be able to analyze the world around them and take action to make a difference where they can. What better way to do this than to let students plan projects and integrate themselves meaningfully into society at a young age?
Have you ever heard loud music coming from our gymnasium? Do cars overflow onto your streets at times? That was probably because of all the wonderful musicals happening at the school! We have an incredible group of parent volunteers who have organized Winter and Spring choirs and concerts: you should come out to hear and watch our lovelies at play, and song, and dance!
Our winter carnival netted us a very colorful ice castle, which lasted all of five hours before it melted away. April 1 will bring Cabane ŕ Sucre. Students will learn a French song, learn how to twirl maple syrup to make a frozen toffee stick and will also get a dash of Canadian history thrown in as well. Later this spring, just as we are finishing our new playground, the kindergarten classes will be releasing butterflies into their newly created flower garden. This will happen at about the same time as our Kindergarten Open House on May 27.
