Helpful Tips

Here are some general tips to keep you fit and physically healthy. If you are experiencing severe mobility and functioning problems, please see a physiotherapist for a personalized assessment and treatment plan.

Getting back into shape? Remember, after extensive immobility or just simply limited activity, you aren't what you used to be. A physiotherapist can give you guidelines for a graduated exercise program to have you climbing those mountains again.

Be fit to sit! There is no one chair which suits everyone. You should try to adjust your sitting position to the one that suits you best.

For safe digging in your garden, don't stoop. When lifting or shovelling, take the strain with your legs rather than your back.

To maintain good posture throughout your life, exercise regularly. Exercise promotes strong and flexible muscles that keep you upright in a proper postural position.

If your work includes using a keyboard, be sure to practise proper body mechanics (meaning, good posture). Sit with the spine against the back of your chair, shoulders relaxed. Elbows should be along the sides of the body and the wrists straight. Keep papers at eye level so that you don't have to bend your neck over your work.
