Dear Shaganappi Residents:
Another year has gone by during which we saw some re-development of older homes facilitated under the previous Land Use Bylaw. Things are changing as the City is processing an update of the LUB after having guided development for over more than 25 years. Changes have also happened at the playground in the Park to which the City contributed $70,000.00. Efforts from volunteers helping out at the Casino have assisted us in paying for the new equipment that many of our youngsters now enjoy. Moneys generated from the Casino events, i.e., made available to community associations, are helping us in maintaining and upgrading our facilities. For example and for those that have visited the hall, you have noticed a new building where we are storing among other items our maintenance equipment.
As you know much more activities are to be expected around the news about the fast-tracking of the LRT to the west. A series of sessions to involve the communities have been completed and in the coming months we hope to disseminate this information together with a recently started neighborhood traffic study. Also, measures to limit vehicle traffic in and out of our community during rush hours are taken and we anticipate signage to that effect in the very near future. Hence, keep an eye open for notices inviting you to attend open houses organized by our Board members.
As our community is an inner-city neighborhood, it is with regret that we are now dealing with a graffiti issue. We have taken steps to remove the graffiti markings but this is costing us money and efforts by volunteers. I appreciate if you can be assistance to be watchful in the area and report any of these activities to the authorities and us at the Board. Also, we continue to welcome volunteers to help us to sustain this most unique community as a safe sanctuary that many of us call home.
Cheers, Dennis Westhoff

A Little Blurb On The Berm
By Beth Tingle
Progress continues to be made on the sound berm project in the off-leash park adjacent to Crowchild Trail. The newly revised plans will retain all mature trees in the park, while still reducing the sound entering the park from Crowchild Trail. Once we have received approval, we will begin our fundraising for this project in earnest. Please contact Beth Tingle, Sound Attenuation Liaison, at 245-4392 for more information or to help in this great community initiative.
Alex
Ferguson Naturalization Project
The Alexander Ferguson Elementary School will be implementing a school yard
naturalization project beginning in the spring of 2007. This project will
transform almost 400 square meters of our schoolyard into a biodiverse natural
area, rich with native Albertan perennials, grasses, and shade trees for
community members and wildlife to enjoy. We will incorporate a sandstone
amphitheatre which will be used as an outdoor teaching space where students will
be actively engaged as they study the required curriculum at all grade levels.
We believe that community members, students at Alexander Ferguson Elementary,
the environment and area wildlife will all benefit from this schoolyard
transformation.
